The appellant, Eddie John Campbell, was convicted of capital murder, as defined by §§ 13A-5-40(a)(2) and
13A-5-40(a)(4), Code of Alabama 1975, and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The evidence as presented by the State tended to establish the following: On December 5, 1987, the Mobile Police Department
was notified that a man was down at 1256 Dauphin Island Parkway. Mobile police officers and fire department paramedics responded
to this call. Upon arrival, they discovered that a white male, later identified as Johnny Sheffield, was lying in a pool of
blood inside a residence at that address. Sheffield was dead, presumably from the numerous stab wounds to his upper back.
It also appeared that Sheffield's pockets had been ransacked and that his wallet was missing.
